Lessons

Week 1

During week 1 we were introduced to the module and what to expect from it during the online course. We also had a lecture on netnography which to my understanding is essentially online based learning. The slides can be seen below.

Week 2

Mr.Tintoy and Ms. Natasha. This week we had two guest lecturers. One was Mr. Tintoy, he presented to us about his modern fusion of the traditional artform Wayang Kulit. While Ms. Natasha presented to us about GAHARA Batik and what makes it unique to its artform.

Week 3

This week we had two more guest lecturers, they were Dr Emelia Ong and Encik Munir. Encik Munir was talking about his batik and how culture plays into design/batik. Dr. Ong explained to us about her PhD research which was about the concepts of culture.

Instructions

Project 1 - Proposal

Week 1 - Week 3

At the beginning of this project we were put into groups. My group and I were first unsure of what we wanted to do so we threw out ideas of cultures that we were interested in. Some examples of this were nordic culture, irish culture, romanian culture etc. After some further discussions we came to focus on egyptian culture. Specifically about ancient egyptian culture and the importance of hieroglyphics. We researched about the hieroglyphics and compiled everything into a slide. This was compiled with our initial design proposals to "revive" hieroglyphics. This was presented during week 3. The presentation is seen below as well as the detailed version.

Project 2 - Data Collection

Week 4 - Week 5

During week 4 - 5 we were to gather data aid in creating our final project. For this my groupmates did further research on the hieroglyphics. Another groupmate and I also did a survey to get further information about what the public knows about hieroglyphics. The presentation is seen below. Within the presentation is also the survey.

Final Project

Week 6 - Week 7

During this week after our data collection my groupmates and I went to make the products we agreed upon for a "gift set". These products were pebble weights, bookmarks, and keychains. There would be three sets to them. I originally was working on the pebble weights but the size of my pebbles were small so another of my members took over for that task. I had to compile everyone's final products. My original pebbles are seen below.

All these products were to be presented within our final presentation. The final presentation and final compilation of project 1 to the final project is seen below.

Feedback

Week 1

Miss Jinchi told us to elaborate more and put some examples or evidence that hieroglyphs have left a mark on the modern world, and told us to be more specific in our research questions, such as what can designers do to revive the Egyptian Hieroglyphs. We needed to be more focused on the reason behind our research, and our end designs had to be cohesive along with the research objective, direction and concept.

Week 2

Miss Jinchi told us to be clearer in our age group, as we were targeting kindergarteners more than children in general. She also pointed out to us that the alphabets we were looking to use were Roman alphabets, not English alphabets. Miss Jinchi also said to add a slide to explain how modern Roman alphabets have been affected by the hieroglyphs, and to work more on fun but practical delivery methods for our design, so that our targeted kindergarteners would get to interact and learn about the hieroglyphs.

Week 3

Miss Jinchi told us that we need a strong explanation on why kindergarten needs to learn about the typography and how to make it more fun. She also mentioned for us to search the basics about hieroglyphs. During our second meeting, we presented the new idea where the feedback given from Miss Jinchi was to find what kind of blessing we will give and to find our target audience.

Week 4

Regarding our presented idea, Miss Jinchi proposed to design our lucky charm blessings as sets.

Week 5

Miss Jinchi stated the importance of our design of the symbols being cohesive and consistent with each other. This meant that because we are all in different locations and can’t physically work together, we should all make sure that even if this is the situation our design outcomes should all look similar as one cohesive product. With this in mind, Miss Jinchi still understood our struggles that we have with doing physical items due to the situation.  We were also told to make sure we understand the reasoning behind why we had chosen the mediums of the designs. Miss Jinchi had also said that we do our research to fully understand what we are doing and why we are doing it.

Week 6

Mr Charles gave us feedback this week highlighting some questions for us to think about for our final presentation which where; "what have you discovered?", "what has emerged?", "the final outcome and the meaning of the frequency of data collection", "why you couldn't explain your limitation--a summary" " the steps that you have taken".

Week 7

Miss Jinchi advised us to make sure our rationale was clear and organized. She asked us a few questions about the decisions we made for the final product to help us prepare our rationale better.

Week 9

During the final presentation the feedback we had gotten from the lecturers were that they thought they had expected more from the outcome. For the outcomes they had wanted to see something more interesting, for example instead of the hieroglyphs being on just rock, they could have been on "pyramids" which were the weights.

Reflection

Experience

This group project has been quite the experience has it's far different to what I expected. Without covid we would have travelled and learnt about the culture of the place we've gone but due to the pandemic the course was altered. With this we had to "virtually" bring ourselves to places by simply using the internet to find information on the cultures we looked at. It was quite sad that we were unable to travel but it was quite enjoyable working with my group. I believe a good group like mine led to good results as we all worked well together without many problems.

Observation

Working with my group, I observed that we were all wanting to succeed well. This was shown through everyone attending the meetings, putting in the work till the late night. I also observed everyone's strengths. With these strengths came their roles, for example Jess was good at rallying everyone together and leading us thus she was the leader of our group.

Findings

I found working on this assignment interesting due to the pandemic, we were limited by the materials that we could work with and how we could work with as we weren't able to physically work together. I think this led us to think further outside the box as we tried to work along the constraints. I found that with these constraints, as designers we just had to think a little harder.
